Sarah, Billie and Bella's glow from home story

Fundraising Stories

On the 13th December 2015 we took part in our first Santa Dash in aid of Rotherham Hospice. Sadly, that just happened to be the same day that my very close friend Erin’s Mum Joan was admitted to the Hospice for care.

The care Joan received was just incredible, and the support Erin and her family had from all the staff at the Hospice was utterly priceless. The comfort and relief they all felt at that time was palpable. They spent Christmas together at the Hospice and were altogether when Joan gained her wings on New Years Morning 2016. The love, care and compassion Joan, Erin and all her family were given left a very deep and lasting impression on me – I saw, I felt it and I have always known just how much it meant to them. And so from that moment on I have always done all I can to support the Hospice so that they can continue to give other families the same level of excellent care, at the moment in life when it is needed the most.

As a family, along with my two children Billy (8yrs old) and Bella (5yrs old) and a Team of Erin’s friends we have now taken part in every Santa Dash since. I have also taken part in the Glow with the Flow walks with our close friend Nicki every year since it started in 2017.

The events are always so well organised, have such a fantastic atmosphere and are a pleasure to be a part of. We love knowing we are doing our bit in memory of Joan and to benefit other families who also need and benefit from the fabulous care of the Hospice.

This years Glow with the Flow was originally planned for the 19th June. As with everything this year, plans have had to change to ensure safety during the Covid 19 pandemic. Although some parts of the lockdown had been lifted that week, for safety reasons the event had already been postponed.

As that week began I started to feel like I needed to do something to mark it. After taking part in the event for 3 years running it just did not feel right to just do nothing, pandemic or not!

So, I discussed it with Billy and Bella who had not done the walk before as it was late at night. I suggested that we could go for a late walk locally, the same as we had been doing during lockdown – but this time we’d wait for dark, and take some Glow sticks and raise money for the Hospice in memory of Auntie Erin’s Mummy. They, of course, thought this was an amazing idea and agreed to it immediately! I ordered a big tube of glow sticks online, and found out my Glow tutu and face paint in readiness.

I worked a long day shift at the hospital that day, when I got home Billy and Bella were excitedly waiting for me to shower and get ready to go out again. We painted our faces, we cracked all our glow sticks, we pulled on our tutus and we waited for it to go dark.

We set off on our usual local walk around our village and Billy was shouting ‘Support Rotherham Hospice’ the whole way round! It felt so good to be doing something so positive and so worthwhile together. It was so much fun and we all loved doing it! My Dad was fortunately still awake when we passed his house and he threw some money in Billy’s collecting tin, which made him so happy.

When we got home I posted the photos and a video I made on Social Media along with a donate button. Amazingly we raised £240, we are so grateful and blown away by everyone’s generosity and support, especially at this very difficult time.

We can not recommend doing a ‘Glow from Home’ enough as it certainly made us feel like we’d made a difference, which is so important.

Here’s hoping we can all get together again for next years event – but for now, get your glow on and go local!

Pam's story

Fundraising Stories

“Thanks to the Hospice, we could live our lives here, like we were at home” – Nicola.

It was October 2016, when Pam was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus, just two years after the family had their first experience of Rotherham Hospice when they sadly lost their Uncle Graham. Pam’s daughter Nicola tells us that the whole family have always supported the Hospice, having lived close by and watched it grow since it was first built.

Following Pam’s diagnosis, she was referred to Rotherham Hospital & Weston Park for chemotherapy treatment. In early 2017 it became clear that treatment was making Pam very ill, and following an admission to hospital the family were given the devastating news that it was likely she was in the last days of her life. It was from this, that the family were put in touch with the Hospice.

Pam’s daughter Nicola and Niece Lauren share with us their story, and how they have come to support the work of Rotherham Hospice. They are both passionate about how they can help to sustain the service they and their family received, even though Auntie Pam never wanted to come to the Hospice. “She was too stubborn!” says Nicola and Lauren.

After much persuasion – especially from Pam’s Nephew Kieran who works at the Hospice’s Inpatient Unit – Pam accepted the offer of treatment at the Hospice, and Nicola tells us the fantastic effect it had on both Pam and the family, and how the diagnosis she was given in the hospital was overcome. “Thanks to the Hospice, we could live our lives here, like we were at home” Lauren tells us. Pam made use of Hospice services such as massages, and hairdressing facilities, both of which Lauren tells us, helped to build her back up both physically and mentally.

Rotherham Hospice Care Day Hospice Community Therapy Health and Wellbeing Healthcare Counselling Bereavement Support Phone South Yorkshire Regular Giving Stories Pams Story

In fact, Nicola tells us that before arriving at the Hospice, Pam had lost lots of weight, had no appetite, and was struggling to walk. After a ten-day stay, Pam left the Hospice, back on her feet, and made such an improvement that she messaged Nicola at midnight to tell her she was raiding the fridge eating Easter Eggs, often more than one at a time!

After improving further, Pam received more chemotherapy but shortly after Easter, Pam was admitted back to the Hospital after becoming dehydrated and her health deteriorated. Pam’s family was told that cancer had spread and a decision was made that Pam would be moved to the Hospice, where she spent six weeks, surrounded daily by friends and family.

“Mum was comfortable here.” Says Nicola. “It allowed us to spend time that we needed and wanted to spend with her, without the constraints of hospital visits and limitations on the number of visitors.”

Nicola tells us that the nurses in particular stood out for their honesty, their caring nature and for making Pam’s family and friends always welcome at the Hospice.

On Wednesday 2nd August 2017, Pamela Scally passed away at the age of 53, surrounded by her family, with her daughter Nicola and husband Paul at her bedside. “It couldn’t have been more peaceful”, “the Hospice couldn’t have done any more than they did for Mum”.

In the short six months since Pam’s passing, Nicola & Lauren have held their own fundraising events for the Hospice and have raised over £6000, a staggering amount in such a short space of time. They started on their fundraising journey by collecting tea, coffee, and biscuits to replace the ones the family used whilst visiting Pam at the Hospice. In addition to this, and with Nicola being a passionate singer and performer, the pair held a Soul & Motown night in December in memory of Pam. Nicola told us: “My mum loved Soul and Motown, mum and I put on our first Motown night to raise money for charity. She inspired me to arrange another Motown night in her memory for Rotherham Hospice.”

We are extremely grateful for all the fundraising efforts that Nicola & Lauren have undertaken for the Hospice, and we couldn’t be more proud to have them representing Glow with the Flow II this year in the Rotherham community. Nicola’s passion for singing will be showcased when she takes to the stage at Glow with the Flow this year, and we hope you’ll agree with her mum Pam who said that when it comes to singing, “she’s alright”.

Your support is vital, and by registering to take part in the brightest, and most colourful event in Rotherham’s calendar, you provide essential support for the Hospice supporting more families like Nicola, Lauren and especially Pam.

“If we can help the Hospice to continue to give the service we have received and continue to receive, we always will.” – Lauren.

My Nannan Sally was a person very close to my heart and she received care and compassion from the Hospice. She would visit every week and staff were always so lovely towards her. My Nan used to visit the day unit to get her hair done and would always talk about how lovely the staff were and how welcoming they made her feel on every visit.

I chose the Sheffield Half Marathon as a way of fundraising for the Hospice. I have never completed anything like a half marathon, so it was a challenge for me. I also wanted to run for my Nan to make her proud and to remember all the love and happiness she gave me.

My friend Michael also lost his Grandad in the Hospice; he too felt that the Hospice provided the best possible care and that they always showed compassion to his Grandad. They helped both his Grandad and the rest of the family through a very difficult time in their lives.

My friends Michael and Samuel (as pictured) and I felt the Sheffield Half Marathon was a challenge and something new that we wanted to be a part of. We wanted to try and push ourselves to achieve more and know that anything is possible. As a group we wanted to raise awareness of Rotherham Hospice and its amazing contribution to people’s lives.

We had an absolutely brilliant day running and it was such a privilege to run for such an amazing charity close to all our hearts!

How Terri's hospice lottery win changed her life

Fundraising Stories

Winning the lottery jackpot here at the Hospice is a big deal for anyone. For Terri, it changed her life.

In 2016 Terri won the £20,000 jackpot just four weeks after she joined the lottery.

Terri’s fantastic sense of community is obvious to me as we sit talking, and she explains to me how her lottery win gave the ability to develop dreams into actions. Terri runs ‘Radiance & Relaxation’, a wonderful business that works with patients suffering from severe depression, anxiety, and stress, referred by the NHS, along with corporate training and workshops.

The £20,000 win allowed Terri to develop her business to the level she dreamed of. It allowed her to buy a van to easily transport goods to enable her to reach patients easily and quickly. It allowed her to train in new therapies that she now offers as a service. It allowed her to buy uniforms. It allowed her to offer free services to the British Red Cross, to MIND, and to Cross Roads Care. It even allowed her to travel to vital conferences in Los Angeles.

It all started when Terri happened to bump into one of our wonderful volunteers collecting for the lottery and decided to join.

“I just wanted to give to the cause” Terri says. She hadn’t assumed she’d ever win it.

Four weeks later, she received a call from Paula, our Lottery Manager, to tell her she’d won the £20,00 jackpot.

“I thought it was a friend making it up, having a joke!” Terri tells me.

Terri has a whole host of new plans for the future, including raising funds to set up a community centre for homeless and vulnerable young people in the area, and teaching relaxation techniques in a safe and relaxed space. And when it comes to her lottery win here at the Hospice, Terri tells us…

“It allowed me to move forward, and allowed the business to move forward, and to give something back.”

If you would like to be in with the chance of winning big on the Local Hospice Lottery, you can sign up quickly and easily by clicking here.

Fundraising Stories

Community fundraising is never a single idea. It’s always very individual and very unique. It can be attending an event, it can be hosting a dinner party, and anything in between. For Judith and her grandchildren, fundraising has been a wonderful creative outlet after experiencing a bereavement earlier in the year, when Judith’s husband Nigel passed away following a short illness.

Since then, Judith and her grandchildren have been incredibly busy creating bookmarks and selling them in order to raise funds for Rotherham Hospice & St Luke’s Hospice. So far they have raised over £1000! An incredible achievement that comes at a time when Hospice’s need support more than ever.

We thank Judith, Ethan, Freya, Lauren, Hattie, Isaac, and Oliver for all their hard work and cannot wait to see their next set of bookmarks, because as Judith says…. “Everyone needs a bookmark!”

Emily's glow from home

Fundraising Stories

Today we bring you the story of one of our youngest, and most awesome supporters, Emily!

Emily is just 3 years old and has already had to undergo surgery to deal with a severe club foot in both feet to help her to walk. She will have to have more surgery in the future. But that has never stopped her doing anything.

Her mum Kelly told us just how driven Emily is. And on October 4th this year, Emily took on the Glow from Home challenge, asked her friends and family for sponsorship, and successfully walked the front grounds of Wentworth Woodhouse, raising an amazing £58 for Rotherham Hospice.

Kelly tells us that Emily’s walk for Rotherham Hospice was the longest she has walked without needing to be picked up or wanting her pram! An incredible achievement!
Emily heard about Glow from Home at her school and decided she wanted to support our cause and prove to everyone how unstoppable she is!

We cannot thank Emily enough, and look forward to hearing about her adventures in the future!

Amanda’s Three Peaks challenge

Team Challinor and Billups take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks

Amanda's Three Peaks challenge

Fundraising Stories

Amanda and her two adult children have been wrestling with adjusting to life since David passed away in August 2018; after battling a Brain Tumour diagnosed in March 2015. The first year after losing the keystone of a family is debilitating but managed through on adrenaline as you anticipate, meet, and move beyond every day’s milestone of birthdays, anniversaries, and memories.

Amanda turned to walking locally, in a bid to provide a sense of purpose for her every morning – and was quickly influenced by the positive feeling it brought to her sense of being, mindfulness and health.

It was a very easy decision to sign up for the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge in 2019, and Amanda was delighted when she soon rallied a 22 strong team of willing volunteers to support her up three mountains on one day – and to raise valuable funds for the Hospice that helped with every inch of every day – keeping David at home – where he wanted to be – for the remaining time he had left, up to passing.

“David passed away at home, with dignity, grace, and his looks intact – I will be forever grateful”.

Team Challinor and Billups take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks

It was 2020 – always one to improve on a personal best – Amanda never puts herself in competition with anyone else, simply in competition with herself.

Doing a re-run of the Yorkshire Three Peaks in the delayed date of September 2020 (thanks Covid-19)!

Amanda completed the walk and took 2 hours off her 2019 challenge time.

Living the lockdowns and 2020 through to the end – a widows grief could have complicated things further still – but – instead 2020 provided:

  • the strength to take more control
  • the strength to make better decisions
  • the strength to stand on her own two feet.
  • the strength to help others in return.

“It’s not been easy, attractive or plain sailing at times – but with the love and respect of so many I can honestly say I have had a very rich year”

“Whether you have picked me up, joined me on my knees, shared scampi and shandy, provided impromptu dinner and bottles of red; taken a midnight call, climbed mountains, improved my home, sent music, texts, cards, flowers, and words of wisdom, rocked up with a hug when it was most needed; got me through a hangover (or into one!) – I am and will remain eternally grateful.”

2021 will just be another year to face, armed with a massive toolkit gained with the support of so many.

“Grief is no longer crippling me; it’s simply part of my DNA & educating me on how to carry it”

What better way to positively move through the next grief chapter than to sign up to the third year running – in completing the Three Yorkshire Peaks – and in a time of sub 10 hours?

Who’s in it with Amanda?

(Story in Amanda’s own words)

Carol and Nikki brave the shave

Fundraising Stories

Late last year, as a family we were devastated to learn that our fun loving, caring, compassionate and prim and proper Momma had gall bladder cancer. From going to hospital with a bout of abdominal pain, just four short weeks later Momma grew her angel wings and passed over to meet her beloved husband, Terry who had passed unexpectedly in the summer.

During those short weeks, Momma’s health deteriorated rapidly and within two weeks, the Rotherham Hospice team were involved, firstly at home where Momma was living with my Ma’s and then in the last week at the Hospice itself.

The care and compassion the team provided to not just Momma but to all of us cannot go unrecognised. Each and every person who we came in contact with, from the domestics, volunteers, health care assistants, nurses and medics were absolutely outstanding. To think that in this day and age they solely rely on fundraising and donations to keep providing the outstanding care they do, baffles me.

During the final week when we were sat round Momma’s bedside in the Hospice, I said I was going to raise money for the Hospice, Momma said it had to be something drastic – typical Rita, a sponsored walk wasn’t enough for her. I said I would do a skydive however, even though I’m 32 years old my Ma said that I wasn’t allowed (quite possibly the only time I have listened to her!) as it was too dangerous. Typical of me, without thinking before I spoke, I said I would shave my hair off. For those that know me, I love my hair!! Momma was delighted at the idea of me raising plenty of money to help support the Hospice in what they do.

Not thinking much of what I said, a couple of days later when Momma was sleeping most of the time and had become quite incoherent I was sat at her bedside, with only the lights of the Christmas tree I had put up in her room, holding her hand listening to Christmas music, she turned to me and said ‘you will do it won’t you?’ Now I was thinking she was talking about making the meat and potato pie which she had repeatedly told us all how to make. So I said yes I’ll make it just how you told me to. She said, ‘No, shave your hair’, realising these would be the last words she ever said to me, I agreed.

The following day with most of us all around her, she closed her eyes one final time. In those dark hours, the team at the Hospice cared for us as you would never know and we cannot thank them enough for all they did for Momma and us. So please, I ask, can you donate to this wonderful cause, like us you just never know when you may need them. No matter how big or small the donation, every little helps.

On Wednesday 14th August, myself and my Ma braved the shave in Tesco, Drummon Street, Rotherham, with the help of the lovely ladies Wendi and Amy from The Cutting Edge Salon, Maltby, raising an amazing £1,348.06 for the Hospice.

‘A year in honour of our mum’ Sally’s story

Rotherham Hospice Care Day Hospice Community Therapy Health and Wellbeing Healthcare Counselling Bereavement Support Phone South Yorkshire Regular Giving Stories Sallys Story

Sally's story

Fundraising Stories

Sally’s calendar of fundraising events this year is filled with huge challenges. From a Run/Swim in June to the London Marathon in 2019, there isn’t much space in between for any more events. And she’s doing it all in memory of her mum Mae Buck. “A year to honour our Mum… Mae Buck”.

Sally’s story begins in September 2017 when her mother was diagnosed with gallstones. Sally had been on holiday for four days in India in November when she received a call from her eldest sister Jayne, who gave her the awful news that her mum had been diagnosed with cancer.

Sally flew home after hearing that her mum had been given only days to live. Mae was on the general ward without palliative care and Sally and her sisters fought to bring their mum home. Sally tells us the situation changed when the district nurse referred her mum to Rotherham Hospice:

Rotherham Hospice Care Day Hospice Community Therapy Health and Wellbeing Healthcare Counselling Bereavement Support Phone South Yorkshire Regular Giving Stories Sallys Story

“It was like angels walked through the door” Sally says. The nurses were available when her mum needed them. On hand with equipment & medicine, Sally tells us that when they needed the Hospice, the Hospice was there to help.

Sally’s mum sadly passed away two days after the Hospice became involved with her care: “Those last two days were made special It allowed us as a family to spend precious time with our mum rather than worrying about her care” Sally says.

It was then that the family decided they would spend a year honouring their mum in aid of Rotherham Hospice.

Since November, Sally – a keen swimmer, who has already swum the English Channel in a relay! – has added a number of events to her diary, culminating at the London Marathon in 2019 in support of Rotherham Hospice. Her diary is filled with the following:

● June: Run/Swim
● June: Great North Swim
● August: Swimming Coniston Water end to end
● October: Yorkshire 10 mile
● November: Leeds Abbey Dash
● As well as cake sales, and a night run
● April 2019: London Marathon

Sally’s incredible fundraising efforts will raise vital funds for Rotherham Hospice over the coming 12 months, allowing us to continue to provide the services and exceptional level of care for others, that Sally, her mum, and the family received.
We could not be more grateful to Sally, and we welcome her to the Hospice family.
You can help Sally reach her target through her Just Giving page, by clicking here.

Eric’s story

Eric's story

Staff and Volunteer Stories

Eric is 86 years old and lives alone. Community volunteer, Sue, visits Eric each week and she takes him out to the supermarket to pick up some shopping and then they enjoy a cuppa together in the café. Eric recently had to give up driving, and he sees Sue as a lifeline. When they are together, you can see they have formed a very close bond. They share stories and enjoy lots of laughter too.

The role of a community volunteer is tailored to suit the individual patient’s needs. This may include just spending time chatting over a cup of tea or coffee, sitting with someone whilst their carer goes out for a while. It may also include going out shopping, a visit to a bird sanctuary, coffee at Wentworth, or Christmas shopping at Parkgate!

Visits can last from 30minutes up to 4 hours – it depends on what the patient and volunteer decide they want to do. As the volunteer visits the same patient each week, a rapport is quickly built between them and this is very beneficial and supportive. If the patient, for whatever reason, wants to stop the visits then that is okay too. Community volunteers are there as a companion for the patient and support for the family.

All the community volunteers go through the Hospice’s volunteer selection procedures as well as attend all the necessary training. They are supported by Hospice clinical staff and are able to feedback on any concerns they may have. If you want to get involved in supporting local people in your area please contact volunteering@rotherhamhospice.org.uk or telephone Tracey Harrison-Marr 01709 308 913 for an application form.
