Sheila's story

Staff and Volunteer Stories

Sheila has been married for 47 years and is now retired.  On a routine visit to her GP Practice, she bumped into Margaret, a friend who was working at the Hospice.  Sheila told Margaret that she was thinking of doing some volunteering and Margaret encouraged her to contact the Hospice.  Sheila’s work background was in administration, so she naturally fell into a role in reception.  She also decided to volunteer in the Inpatient Unit, and then 2 years ago she took on the additional role of Bereavement Support Volunteer as well.

Sheila tells us, “I consider it an honor and a privilege to be a Hospice volunteer.  It’s extremely rewarding, and I’ve even made a whole new set of friends.  I enjoy the Bereavement Support sessions, and it’s great that the first lady I supported is now a Hospice volunteer too! My three volunteer roles are very varied and I get to meet some amazing people. You really get to know the patients and their families, and it is a fantastic feeling to know that you are making a difference in their lives.”

If you would like to volunteer like Sheila, you can find out more information on our volunteering pages.

Sandra's story

Staff and Volunteer Stories

It’s been a particularly cold February this year, even before the snow. But as soon as I wandered in from Maltby High Street, into our Hospice Furniture Shop, I was offered a warm cup of coffee (or tea!) and a chat. The shop has a unique sense of community about it, and that’s exactly what Sandra – a volunteer at Maltby Furniture Shop – wishes to convey.

Rotherham Hospice Care Day Hospice Community Therapy Health and Wellbeing Healthcare Counselling Bereavement Support Phone South Yorkshire Regular Giving Stories Sandras Story

Sandra sits opposite me, and it soon becomes clear she has a passion for the community, and for creating an atmosphere in which everyone feels comfortable chatting, laughing, wandering the great furniture on offer, and getting to know neighbours. Sandra tells me she’s worked in hospitals and nursing homes for a number of years and loves the interaction she has with people. She loves to hear their stories, and share conversations, memories, and ideas. She absolutely loved tapping into the creativity of the people she meets, by creating art together.

In November 2017, Sandra decided to volunteer her time at Rotherham Hospice’s Maltby Furniture Shop. She sits telling me all the reasons she wanted to volunteer, and it all fits perfectly with the image of the shop as a community hub, as well as a furniture shop…

“I love chatting and putting people at ease. And if it helps to bring the community together, why not?” Sandra says.

For Sandra, volunteering at the Hospice shop is all about giving back to the community and creating a welcoming space, for all who walk through the Hospice shop doors. Even if it’s just for a chat and a cup of coffee, Sandra is happy to have people pop in and say hi.

Visit Rotherham Hospice Furniture Store, on Maltby High Street, for great offers, and a friendly welcome.

Adam Dowling's story

Staff and Volunteer Stories

Adam works for NHS England. He contacted the Hospice back in December, to inquire about volunteering, as part of NHS England’s volunteering programme. The programme allows and encourages staff to spend one day a week for five weeks at a place of their choice. Adam kindly chose Rotherham Hospice to donate his time.

Rotherham Hospice Care Day Hospice Community Therapy Health and Wellbeing Healthcare Counselling Bereavement Support Phone South Yorkshire Regular Giving Stories Story Adam Dowling

The Hospice appealed to Adam as a place to volunteer, because his mum passed away here after spending four days on the IPU, three years ago. Adam tells us that his experience with the Hospice was a good one, during an exceptionally difficult and emotional time, and that the aftercare he and his family received has been invaluable since his mum was here.

Choosing the Hospice as a place to volunteer, was for Adam, a chance to:
“…turn a personal negative time, into a positive experience.”

With a love of cooking, Adam was keen to see how catering at the Hospice works and was soon working in the Hospice kitchen, where he quickly made a positive impact. Head Chef Mark told us: “Adam has been a great help in the Kitchen, and we thank him for giving up his time.”

Adam is one of over 400 volunteers who, in total, gave an incredible 40,000 hours in 2016, to help out at the Hospice. The importance of those hours given, and the volunteers who gave them, cannot be overstated. They keep the Hospice running. Whether in the Hospice kitchen, like Adam, or at events, at our shops, administrating, or out collecting or fundraising, Rotherham Hospice relies on the generosity of people giving up their free time, to come and help out.

Denise’s story

Denise's story

25 Year Anniversary Stories

“It feels as if the Hospice is my comfort blanket.”, Denise says as she recounts the care and support she’s received from Rotherham Hospice in recent months.

Denise has a lovely story to tell, and we even chatted about the trials of her time in the Highlands trying to work with dial-up internet! How times change!

Recently it’s been a tough time for Denise and her family. Earlier this year she moved from Aintree to Rotherham and told me that she often felt alone, especially with trying to manage her symptoms and all the emotional and financial strains that come with it for her and her family.

After speaking to a Doctor for some pain relief following a recent pancreatitis flare up, Denise received a call from Louise from our Hospice Community Team:

“It came as a shock, hearing the word ‘Hospice’” Denise says.

But after Louise popped round to visit her, Denise says:

“Louise’s visit changed our lives totally. She sorted out our PIPs (Personal Independence Payments) and helped financially so we’re not having to pay car tax among other things”.

Since then, Denise has had regular support from the community team here at the Hospice and tells us how important it has been for her and her family;

“I can’t put into words how wonderful they are” Denise says.

And as to Louise, Denise cheekily ends our chat with “Louise is the best thing that’s entered my life…. after my husband of course!”

Sue’s story

Rotherham Hospice Care Day Hospice Community Therapy Health and Wellbeing Healthcare Counselling Bereavement Support Phone South Yorkshire Meet the team

Sue's story

25 Year Anniversary Stories

“Rotherham Hospice opened at a very interesting time.” Sue tells me, as she explains the complexity of starting the Hospice In-Patient Unit as a brand new service.

Sue had been a GP for 18 years when she arrived at Rotherham Hospice. She had trained for a week at St Luke’s Hospice in Sheffield, and a new Hospice in Rotherham immediately took her interest. She then worked for a Masters degree in Palliative Care at Sheffield University.

“Hospices started as nursing homes for terminally ill people, but by the time the Rotherham Hospice was opening they were moving more towards Specialist Palliative Care. From near the beginning, around half the patients admitted went home again. People still came for terminal care, but they also came for specialist treatment, as well as respite care.”

“There were a lot of things to sort out in those early days. Nurses would visit other Hospices to see how they did things.” Decisions made at that time around care, support, and services would be the basis for the Hospice as we know it today.

For the Hospice to develop, lots of conversations with local organisations and recruitment of new members to the team were needed. We developed the Specialist Palliative Care Multi-Disciplinary Team, which could provide a more comprehensive and coordinated service for patients than was possible at the hospital. We also took a lead with commissioning, setting priorities for the use of new funding, and using our knowledge of national standards. This was invaluable to the development of Palliative Care in Rotherham. Do Not Attempt Resuscitation (DNAR) orders were discussed and devised.

“As the Hospice staff, with the hospital and community Macmillan nurses, offered specialist palliative care in Rotherham, we knew what additional services were needed, such as a palliative care drug formulary, more home care, a lymphedema service, a 24-hour advice line, and complementary therapies.” Sue says as she speaks about the very beginnings of the services that run like clockwork to this day.

Later down the line, services like Hospice at Home developed, through a combination of help from MacMillan nurses and the Hospice. An additional Macmillan nurse visiting nursing homes provided more palliative care support. Two decades later, Hospice at Home made over 1000 visits to patients and families in their homes in 2019 alone.

During the years Sue spent at the Hospice a lot took place. From the arrival of Honey – Matron’s PET, or Pets As Therapy dog – who wandered the Hospice making friends with patients and families, to arranging weddings, to winning a TV garden landscaping show that came to Rotherham and redeveloped the Hospice gardens, to a visit from the Duchess of Gloucester for the official opening.

As for the feel of the building itself, Sue remembers that the ethos in those early days was always “a home from home”. For this, Sue tells us that volunteers became the driving force behind that homely feel, ensuring patients and their families were comfortable and had teas and coffees when needed, chatting and laughing with patients every day. To this day, volunteers remain indispensable to the Hospice, providing that same friendly approach and so much more across all of our services.

So much has changed since the late 1990s, but what remains the same is the commitment of our wonderful staff and volunteers to delivering exceptional palliative care services for the people in and around Rotherham, and providing that homely feel the moment you walk through our doors on Broom Road.

Joe's story

25 Year Anniversary Stories

“When we started Right Choice Mortgages back in 2018 we knew we wanted to help a local charity. Rotherham Hospice was always going to be the place”.

In less than three years since they began their journey, Right Choice Mortgages have raised over £10,000 for Rotherham Hospice. And that’s not all… they’ve donated Easter Eggs at Easter, Joe’s sister Holly surprised us by arriving with ice lollies during last summer’s heatwave, they’ve helped to promote our events, and they’ve even donated two Rotherham United season tickets to our patients and families! Their support over the past few years has been invaluable.

Joe, Right Choice Mortgages’ Managing Director, first came into contact with the Hospice back in 1998 at the age of 10 when his dad, Norman, was looked after following his cancer diagnosis. Norman was one of the first patients to use the inpatient facility and even appeared in the local paper with his MacMillan nurse Karen.

Rotherham Hospice Care Day Hospice Community Therapy Health and Wellbeing Healthcare Counselling Bereavement Support Phone South Yorkshire Regular Giving Stories Joes Story

Norman sadly passed away in 1999.

In the years that followed, Joe’s mum and sisters raised money for the Hospice and took part in our annual Lights of Love appeal every Christmas time. In 2008 tragedy struck again as Joe’s mum Geraldine was diagnosed with cancer.

Geraldine was cared for by Rotherham Hospice, staying in our Edelweiss Room. The room overlooks Herringthorpe playing fields, which Joe remembers with fondness along with the time spent at the Hospice;

“If you’re going to go anywhere at the end of life, this is the place you’d want to go”.

The café at the Hospice also holds a spot in Joe’s memory of that time… especially for the Burritos (his Mum rang him to tell him about how lovely they were). And none of it, from the inpatient unit to the café and beyond, could be possible without our wonderful volunteers.

“When you find out so many people who work at the Hospice are volunteers, it’s just amazing. They’d often sit with mum and just natter. It’s lovely to know that when I was working, there’s someone there to keep mum company, so she was not alone”.

In the years that have passed, Right Choice Mortgages have been busy challenging themselves by taking part in the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge and conquering it in under 12 hours:

“We absolutely loved the 3 Peaks. We’d encourage anyone to do it, for the experience!” Joe says.

They’re currently considering a new challenge, possibly a trek in a far-off land, to raise as much sponsorship as possible for Rotherham Hospice. Keep a lookout on our website and on social media for their next big fundraising adventure!

Joe finishes by summarising his experience of Rotherham Hospice over the years; “We’re so lucky to have something like this on our doorstep. It isn’t something that should be taken for granted – ever.”

For their kind words, and their spectacular fundraising over the years that continues to allow the Hospice to provide our services across Rotherham even in these most challenging of times, we thank Joe and Right Choice Mortgages, and look forward to seeing them at events in the future when we’re all free to meet up and fundraise together once again!

The story of Sunbeams

Rotherham Hospice Care Day Hospice Community Therapy Health and Wellbeing Healthcare Counselling Bereavement Support Phone South Yorkshire Sunbeams

The story of Sunbeams

25 Year Anniversary Stories

“There wasn’t anything else out there to support bereaved children. They had nowhere to go” Cath tells us as she explains the motivation behind setting up Rotherham Hospice’s Sunbeams Children’s Bereavement Group almost 10 years ago.

A group for supporting children who have suffered a bereavement had been spoken about for some time at the Hospice, and Cath wanted any version of the group to be informal, welcoming and friendly.

After discussions, the idea that emerged was to create an activity-based group for children to keep their minds busy and active whilst also talking and dealing with feelings and emotions associated with the loss of a loved one.

And in September 2011 Sunbeams was created.

Originally Cath and Liz worked in their spare time to develop Sunbeams, and each month the first group met with 7 children participating. After a while, in 2015 it became clear that more time was needed to be spent on Sunbeams, and Cath moved to work on Sunbeams full time.

“We started to get referrals fast, and so we held groups once a fortnight instead of once a month”.

The increase in referrals highlighted to Cath and Liz that there was a real need for a bereavement support programme specifically for children, and since 2011, Sunbeams has supported over 340 children.

Sunbeams

“We started to get referrals fast, and so we held groups once a fortnight instead of once a month”.

The increase in referrals highlighted to Cath and Liz that there was a real need for a bereavement support programme specifically for children, and since 2011, Sunbeams has supported over 340 children.

Over the years Sunbeams has grown and become a vital service that Rotherham Hospice provides. In 2017 Sunbeams opened its own Sunbeams Hut in the Hospice gardens, kindly funded by Eurovia and the Rotary Club of Rotherham for furnishing. The hut offers a welcoming, quiet, creative environment for the group to meet. Mary came on board as a member of staff for Sunbeams soon after, but she had supported Sunbeams as a volunteer since the beginning.

The group play games, they develop their creative sides with arts and crafts, and if you were to wander through our Hospice gardens today, you’d see butterflies on the fence created by the Sunbeams children. Cath tells us that none of this could be possible without the wonderful volunteers who come along to the groups to ensure it runs smoothly.

“Our volunteers are amazing. We couldn’t do it without them”.

This past year – 2020 – has been a challenge on so many fronts, and Sunbeams hasn’t been immune to the difficulties caused by the global pandemic. In the first couple of months Sunbeams had to be put on hold as staff and resources were deployed elsewhere. Though despite the challenge, Cath, Mary and Liz made sure that families knew that Sunbeams was here for them if they needed us.

This February – 2021 – limited online support has been back up and running for Sunbeams, offering support over phone and webcam. Though Cath says that face-to-face group time has so many more benefits;

“You can see it on the kids faces when they realise they can share experiences with each other and know they’re not alone”.

As the World moves back toward a sense of normality, the future of Sunbeams is bright and we look forward to keeping you all updated as it moves into its next decade of providing a vital support service for children in Rotherham.

Tony’s story

Rotherham Hospice Care Day Hospice Community Therapy Health and Wellbeing Healthcare Counselling Bereavement Support Phone South Yorkshire Meet the team

Tony's story

25 Year Anniversary Stories

This is Tony’s story, in his own words.

Our story starts back in 1986 when Brian, Joyce’s husband and dad to my wife Gillian and her sister Janine lost his battle with lung cancer at the age of 53.  Joyce, aged 50 was left a widow and her lifelong partner no longer there. Sometime shortly after that Joyce saw a piece in the Rotherham Advertiser asking if people would be interested in fund raising to get Rotherham it’s own hospice.  Joyce knowing this would have been a huge help to her got involved.

Joyce and her dear friend Beth Morris stood in the entrance to Rotherham Hospital with a bric a brac stall for many years along with getting involved with lots of fundraising including car boot sales and raffles.  We even held a few barn dances in aid of the Hospice.  Joyce continued to be involved as a volunteer within the day hospice helping with general duties and training to hand massages to patients.

In later years Joyce benefitted form the day hospice service following consecutive surgeries to remove a growth in her lung then a heart valve repair and during the 18 months of her life Joyce was looked after by the hospice team a service which became the one thing we could all rely on at such a difficult time.

Joyce passed away in the Hospice in September 2018.

Her birthday, 11th February, came around in 2019 and we were carrying out her final wish of all the family having a short break together when we all decided that we had to carry on her legacy as a family.  Lots of ideas were discussed and during 2019 we began our fundraising efforts.

They have included raffles, sponsored walks (national 3 peaks), donations in lieu of gifts on birthdays.  We set up a mobile disco (54 beats) and decided to donate all proceeds to the Hospice, my wife Gillian creates flower arrangements and sells them on again donating all income including the cost of materials.  Our fundraising totalled just over £11k last year and along came lockdown.

Events we had planned have been postponed but we have still continued with our donations in lieu of birthdays, flower arrangements and I have done some online dj events which have raised some money, not what we wanted but we are still trying to do what we can.

All the family including myself and wife Gillian, Janine and her husband Keith, grandchildren Rebecca, Kathryn, Lewis and Abigail have all been involved and are looking forward to resuming at full speed when allowed to do so.

Dr Steve Burns’ story

Rotherham Hospice Care Day Hospice Community Therapy Health and Wellbeing Healthcare Counselling Bereavement Support Phone South Yorkshire Meet the team

Dr Steve Burns' story

25 Year Anniversary Stories

This year – 2021 – marks 25 years since Rotherham Hospice opened its building on Broom Road. But the story doesn’t start there.

The idea of bringing hospice care to Rotherham dates back almost a decade before the building, it brings with it fundraising, competitions for the logo, and even a charity football game that included Sir Alex Ferguson. Steve Burns was there at that pivotal moment as the first chair of the fundraising committee.

“Patients used to go to St Luke’s in Sheffield. This was the 80s, so a lot of people didn’t have cars. A journey could take a couple of hours to visit a loved one.” Steve says, explaining how the idea for a Hospice in Rotherham came about.

Steve, who worked as a GP for many years, was out with a friend after work one night when the conversation got around to hospice care.

Following that discussion they heard about a committee being set up by Ralph Weston, Chaplain at the Hospital, to raise money for palliative care in Rotherham. They met and Ralph was elected the overall Chairman with Steve being the first Fundraising Chairman of the new committee.

After a few months, and several coffee mornings and sponsored walks later, the group had raised around £2000, and decided to create a charity. Having no experience in creating charities, the fundraisers turned to Solicitor John Woffenden and very soon afterwards The Rotherham Hospice Trust was born.

“We wanted to keep the aims clear; providing care and support for those suffering from a life-threatening illness.” Steve explains. And so originally there was no specific aim for a hospice building. The aim was to raise £1,000,000 to provide palliative care to the people of Rotherham.

Rotherham Hospice was now a charity, and a launch was set. Business leaders, local councillors, GPs, Hospital Doctors, Community Staff, and the media were all invited and the leader of the council Sir Jack Layden approved a grant of £2000 for the launch.

As time went on, more and more was raised through sponsored events, through BBQs, coffee mornings, and even through a football match between Rotherham United All Stars and a Celebrity All Stars team that included stars like Sir Alex Ferguson, and the Chuckle Brothers, and even made its way into The Sun newspaper.

The Hospice was well and truly on its way to the wonderful building on Broom Road; the services that would soon develop such as our community team providing care in homes across Rotherham; our 14-bed inpatient unit; our Day Hospice; and our Sunbeams Child Bereavement Support Group.

The fundraising that has taken place over the years, from midnight memory walks to conquering the 3 Peaks and jumping out of planes, the support from the people of Rotherham, can all date back not just to the opening of the building in 1996, but to that very first fundraising group back in the 1980s.
