Amanda's Three Peaks challenge
Fundraising Stories
Amanda and her two adult children have been wrestling with adjusting to life since David passed away in August 2018; after battling a Brain Tumour diagnosed in March 2015. The first year after losing the keystone of a family is debilitating but managed through on adrenaline as you anticipate, meet, and move beyond every day’s milestone of birthdays, anniversaries, and memories.
Amanda turned to walking locally, in a bid to provide a sense of purpose for her every morning – and was quickly influenced by the positive feeling it brought to her sense of being, mindfulness and health.
It was a very easy decision to sign up for the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge in 2019, and Amanda was delighted when she soon rallied a 22 strong team of willing volunteers to support her up three mountains on one day – and to raise valuable funds for the Hospice that helped with every inch of every day – keeping David at home – where he wanted to be – for the remaining time he had left, up to passing.
“David passed away at home, with dignity, grace, and his looks intact – I will be forever grateful”.
It was 2020 – always one to improve on a personal best – Amanda never puts herself in competition with anyone else, simply in competition with herself.
Doing a re-run of the Yorkshire Three Peaks in the delayed date of September 2020 (thanks Covid-19)!
Amanda completed the walk and took 2 hours off her 2019 challenge time.
Living the lockdowns and 2020 through to the end – a widows grief could have complicated things further still – but – instead 2020 provided:
- the strength to take more control
- the strength to make better decisions
- the strength to stand on her own two feet.
- the strength to help others in return.
“It’s not been easy, attractive or plain sailing at times – but with the love and respect of so many I can honestly say I have had a very rich year”
“Whether you have picked me up, joined me on my knees, shared scampi and shandy, provided impromptu dinner and bottles of red; taken a midnight call, climbed mountains, improved my home, sent music, texts, cards, flowers, and words of wisdom, rocked up with a hug when it was most needed; got me through a hangover (or into one!) – I am and will remain eternally grateful.”
2021 will just be another year to face, armed with a massive toolkit gained with the support of so many.
“Grief is no longer crippling me; it’s simply part of my DNA & educating me on how to carry it”
What better way to positively move through the next grief chapter than to sign up to the third year running – in completing the Three Yorkshire Peaks – and in a time of sub 10 hours?
