Sally's story

Fundraising Stories

Sally’s calendar of fundraising events this year is filled with huge challenges. From a Run/Swim in June to the London Marathon in 2019, there isn’t much space in between for any more events. And she’s doing it all in memory of her mum Mae Buck. “A year to honour our Mum… Mae Buck”.

Sally’s story begins in September 2017 when her mother was diagnosed with gallstones. Sally had been on holiday for four days in India in November when she received a call from her eldest sister Jayne, who gave her the awful news that her mum had been diagnosed with cancer.

Sally flew home after hearing that her mum had been given only days to live. Mae was on the general ward without palliative care and Sally and her sisters fought to bring their mum home. Sally tells us the situation changed when the district nurse referred her mum to Rotherham Hospice:

“It was like angels walked through the door” Sally says. The nurses were available when her mum needed them. On hand with equipment & medicine, Sally tells us that when they needed the Hospice, the Hospice was there to help.

Sally’s mum sadly passed away two days after the Hospice became involved with her care: “Those last two days were made special It allowed us as a family to spend precious time with our mum rather than worrying about her care” Sally says.

It was then that the family decided they would spend a year honouring their mum in aid of Rotherham Hospice.

Since November, Sally – a keen swimmer, who has already swum the English Channel in a relay! – has added a number of events to her diary, culminating at the London Marathon in 2019 in support of Rotherham Hospice. Her diary is filled with the following:

● June: Run/Swim
● June: Great North Swim
● August: Swimming Coniston Water end to end
● October: Yorkshire 10 mile
● November: Leeds Abbey Dash
● As well as cake sales, and a night run
● April 2019: London Marathon

Sally’s incredible fundraising efforts will raise vital funds for Rotherham Hospice over the coming 12 months, allowing us to continue to provide the services and exceptional level of care for others, that Sally, her mum, and the family received.
We could not be more grateful to Sally, and we welcome her to the Hospice family.
