Father and Son Team Up to Beat Their Walking Record for Rotherham Hospice

Father and Son Team Up to Beat Their Walking Record for Rotherham Hospice

At Rotherham Hospice, stories of love, remembrance, and determination intertwine, forming the fabric of the community’s support. One such tale involves Daniel Wotawa and his son Finley, who are gearing up for an extraordinary challenge in honour of a beloved family member.

Finley, 11-years-old, and his father Daniel are no strangers to the trails. Their shared passion for walking has seen them travel countless miles together, exploring nature’s wonders and forging unforgettable memories. But this time, their journey holds a deeper significance as they prepare to surpass their previous walking record of 30 miles in a single day.

Their motivation? A heartfelt tribute to Finley’s Great Grandad Judd, whose final days were marked by the compassionate care of Rotherham Hospice. Judd’s journey was made more comfortable and dignified, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Hospice’s remarkable team, leaving an indelible mark on Daniel, Finley, and their family.

In a testament to their gratitude, Daniel and Finley have set their sights on an ambitious route: a trek from Leeds city centre to Thrybergh in Rotherham. It’s a symbolic journey, mirroring the path taken by many seeking solace and support at Rotherham Hospice during their time of need.

For Finley, walking alongside his father has been a lifelong adventure. From his earliest steps, he has embraced the challenge of long-distance walks with a fierce determination. Now, armed with experience beyond his years, Finley is ready to take on this new challenge, driven by a desire to give back to the place that offered comfort to his family in their time of sorrow.

Daniel, proud of his son’s resilience and compassion, sees this endeavour as more than just a physical feat. It’s an opportunity to instil values of empathy and generosity in Finley, as they work together to make a difference in the lives of others.

As they lace up their boots and prepare to embark on their journey, Daniel and Finley invite friends, family, and the community to join them in their mission. Through sponsorship and donations, they hope to raise vital funds for Rotherham Hospice, ensuring that its invaluable services continue to touch the lives of countless families in the years to come.

Their message is clear: every step counts, every donation makes a difference. Together, they are walking not only in remembrance of Great Grandad Judd but also in solidarity with all those who have found comfort and support at Rotherham Hospice.

As they set out on their expedition, Daniel and Finley carry with them the spirit of love, resilience, and community that defines the ethos of Rotherham Hospice. With each stride, they move closer to their goal, united in their mission to honour the past, embrace the present, and build a brighter future for all.

Navigating Grief on Valentine’s Day

Navigating Grief on Valentine's Day

As Valentine’s Day approaches, we understand that it can be a challenging time for those who have lost a loved one under our care. Grief doesn’t take a holiday, and special occasions can often amplify the sense of loss. In this blog post, we want to acknowledge the pain that some may be feeling and offer support for navigating the complexities of grief during this season of love.

Understanding Grief on Valentine’s Day

Grief is a unique journey for each individual, and there is no set timeline for healing. Valentine’s Day, a day traditionally associated with love and celebration, can evoke a range of emotions for those who have recently experienced loss. It is essential to recognise and honour these feelings, allowing yourself the time and space to grieve.

Connecting with Your Hospice Family

At Rotherham Hospice, we consider everyone who has been touched by our care to be part of our extended family. Your Hospice family is here to support you not only during the difficult times but also during moments of celebration and remembrance. Remember that you are not alone, and your grief is valid.

Coping Strategies

  1. Celebrate the Memories: Take the time to reflect on the beautiful memories you shared with your loved one. Consider creating a memory box or journal to honour their legacy.

  2. Create New Traditions: Establishing new traditions can help shift the focus from the pain of loss to the celebration of your loved one’s life. This could include lighting a candle, visiting a special place, or sharing stories with family and friends.

  3. Seek Support: Reach out to your Hospice family, friends, or support groups to share your feelings. Talking about your grief can be a comforting and healing experience.

Score Big for Charity: Rotherham United’s FA Cup Match Worn Shirts Up for Grabs in Exclusive Auction Benefiting Rotherham Hospice

Rotherham United auction FA Cup match-worn shirts for Rotherham Hospice

Rotherham United, in collaboration with our dedicated sleeve sponsors Star People Recruitment, is generously facilitating the charitable sales of seven match-worn and signed shirts from the Emirates FA Cup Third Round tie at Fulham for the 2023/24 season.

Star People Recruitment, a sister company of Events 4 Healthcare, made this kind donation in support of Rotherham Hospice, showcasing their commitment to giving back to the community. Their branding adorned the Millers’ shirt sleeves during the Craven Cottage tie, and as part of their new commercial agreement with the club, they expressed a desire to raise funds for the Hospice by donating a number of shirts worn during the competition.

The wonderful partnership between Rotherham United, Star People Recruitment, and Charity Stars has paved the way for an online auction featuring the match-worn and signed jerseys. We are thrilled to announce that 100% of the profits from this auction will be directed towards Rotherham Hospice, allowing us to continue our invaluable services within the community.

Last season’s auction, facilitated by the Millers in collaboration with Charity Stars, raised over £2,000. With seven shirts up for auction this year, they are hopeful to surpass that amount and make an even greater impact on the Hospice’s funding needs. The generous donations raised through this initiative will contribute to the staggering £3 million per year required to sustain the Hospice’s essential services.

Rotherham Hospice serves as a comforting, supportive, and dignified environment for our community, especially during life’s most challenging circumstances. The funds raised through this auction will play a vital role in ensuring the continued provision of these crucial services for years to come.

We would also like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our Diamond Partners – AESSEAL, Equisolve, Hughie Construction Ltd, IPM Group, Mears Group, and Steelphalt. Their support enables us to proudly display the Rotherham Hospice logo on our first team shirts throughout the 2023/24 season, thanks to a unique charitable commercial agreement.

Star People, as the strategic recruitment and outsourced partner for pharma, MedTech, and biotech companies, has made this auction possible through their immense generosity. To learn more about Star People and their impactful work, please visit their website [here](insert link).

The match-worn shirts available in this year’s auction include:

  • Arvin Appiah (Match Worn)
  • Tolaji Bola (Match Issued)
  • Tom Eaves (Match Worn)
  • Dexter Lembikisa (Match Worn)
  • Jamie Lindsay (Match Worn)
  • Ollie Rathbone (Match Worn)
  • Seb Revan (Match Worn)

Steve Coakley, Commercial Director at Rotherham United, expressed his gratitude for Star People’s commitment to both the club and the local community: “We want to work with people and businesses whose values align with ours, and Star People has proven to be a fantastic commercial partner. Their selfless gesture in support of Rotherham Hospice will undoubtedly raise a fantastic amount of money.”

We are excited to collaborate with Charity Stars on this project, ensuring that every Millers supporter has the opportunity to contribute to the fundraising online and, in return, potentially acquire one of these unique and cherished match-worn shirts from English football’s oldest cup competition.

We extend our sincere thanks to Star People Recruitment and all involved partners for their generosity and commitment to making a positive impact on the community. Together, we can make a difference, one auction at a time.

Caring for Each and Every Individual

So far in 2023, our dedicated team at Rotherham Hospice provided compassionate care to 437 individuals on our InPatient Unit. It’s a testament to the commitment of our staff, ensuring that each person received the comfort and support they needed during challenging times. Your generosity has allowed us to expand our reach and continue our mission of providing care and support to those in need.

A significant milestone in our journey was the announcement by Rotherham United, with 6 Diamond Partners investing in featuring Rotherham Hospice as the main sponsor on the 23/24 season shirt. The overwhelming support from the club, Diamond Partners, and the RUFC community has been instrumental in propelling our cause forward and we can’t thank them enough for all their support in 2023.

Navigating Grief During the Festive Season

Navigating Grief During the Festive Season

Navigating Grief During the Festive Season: A message from Rotherham Hospice

At Rotherham Hospice, we understand that this time of year can be particularly difficult for individuals and families who are navigating the complex emotions that accompany loss. Grief doesn’t take a holiday, and it’s okay to acknowledge and embrace the sad feelings that may arise during this season.

Embracing the Complexity of Emotions

Grief is a personal journey, and there is no right or wrong way to grieve. During the holidays, emotions can be especially intense as we reminisce about past celebrations and traditions shared with those who have died.  It’s essential to recognise that feeling a mix of sadness, nostalgia, and even moments of joy is a normal part of the grieving process.

Honouring Memories

This Christmas, consider finding meaningful ways to honour and celebrate the memories of your loved one. Lighting a candle, creating a special ornament, or sharing stories with family and friends can be powerful ways to keep their spirit alive during the holiday season. These rituals can serve as a comforting bridge between the past and the present.

Seeking Support

Navigating grief can be a challenging journey, and it’s crucial to remember that you don’t have to face it alone. Whether through counselling, support groups, or reaching out to friends and family, connecting with others who understand your experience can provide comfort and a sense of shared understanding. Remember that crying is a natural response to extreme sadness, not something to be avoided.  Those who are strong and sensible, seek out appropriate support when they are feeling low.

Adjusting Traditions

It’s okay to reassess and adjust holiday traditions to accommodate the changes brought about by loss. Whether it’s starting new traditions or modifying existing ones, finding ways to honour your loved one while allowing space for your own healing is an important aspect of the grieving process. You may want to visit a cemetery or a favourite place of your loved one. Some people have a tradition of walking in the countryside or even sharing time doing an activity or hobby the loved one used to do.

Self-Compassion

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the season, remember to be kind to yourself. Grieving takes time, and it’s valuable to prioritise self-care. Whether it’s taking a quiet moment alone, indulging in a favourite activity, or seeking professional support, giving yourself the space to feel and heal is a crucial part of the journey.

Christmas candles against a backdrop of snow

As we navigate the complexities of grief during the holiday season, let us be gentle with ourselves and with others. At Rotherham Hospice, we extend our support to those who may be finding this time of year particularly challenging. Remember, your feelings are valid, and there is a community ready to offer understanding and compassion.

May this holiday season be a time of reflection, connection, and healing for all those who carry the weight of grief in their hearts. From our Hospice family to yours, we wish you moments of peace, comfort, and the strength to embrace the love that endures beyond the physical presence of those we hold dear.
