Aimee's Volunteering Story

Staff and Volunteer Stories

It’s Volunteers’ Week, and here at Rotherham Hospice, we are celebrating our incredible volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to support our cause.  Last but not least this Volunteers’ Week, meet Aimee; our amazing Dinnington shop volunteer!

What is Volunteers’ Week?

Volunteers’ Week celebrates the amazing contributions volunteers make to communities across the UK. The celebration starts on the first Monday in June every year. It’s a chance to recognise, celebrate, and thank the UK’s incredible volunteers for all they contribute to our local communities, the voluntary sector, and society as a whole.

A Conversation With Aimee

Q: How long have you volunteered and what is your role?

A: I have been volunteering for 8 years. I volunteer at our Charity Shop based in Dinnington.

Q: What do you enjoy about volunteering?
A: When I first started volunteering for Rotherham Hospice I struggled to talk to people and didn’t have much confidence. Since volunteering I have built up my confidence. I have also made friends and enjoy giving my time and knowing I have helped to make a difference.

Q: Why do you volunteer?
A: I have learning difficulties which means I am unable to work fulltime. So volunteering for Rotherham Hospice gives me a purpose. My mum passed away in the hospice in 2019. So I volunteer because they looked after my mum.

Q: What is your role
A: I prefer to work in the back so each evening Dawn builds me a mountain of clothes for me to work through the next day. I love doing this, the mountain you see next to me will take me about 3 hours a then I will be ready to start on the next load. I love being really busy when I am here.
