A game to remember: Rotherham United game raises £58,500 for charities

We are absolutely overwhelmed with gratitude following Rotherham United’s Game of the Century — an extraordinary occasion that has raised a remarkable £58,500, shared equally between Rotherham Hospice and the Community Trust’s 50k Power Play.

To everyone at Rotherham United — thank you. Hosting an event of this scale, in the name of charity, speaks volumes about the club and the community it represents, and we are incredibly proud to have been part of it.

The match itself was a true celebration of the football club’s Centenary Year, bringing together legends from across its history for a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition game held in memory of Owen Jenkinson. From Tony Towner kicking things off, to Howard Webb officiating, Neil Warnock’s rather memorable red card exit, and a VAR decision from our very own hospice ambassador John Breckin that had the crowd talking — it was a day full of warmth, humour, and genuine community spirit.

Throw in Adam Le Fondre’s finishing, Chris Sedgwick’s deliveries, and a Guy Branston challenge that probably hasn’t lost any of its bite, and you had a matchday that nobody who attended will forget in a hurry.

We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the match sponsors, Fintel, and to the team sponsors Tatton Investment Management (Ronnie and Breck’s XI) and RSMR (Neil Warnock’s XI), as well as every person who sponsored a player on the day. The generosity shown through ticket sales, programme purchases, raffles, tombolas, and bucket collections is what has made that total possible — and what a total it is.

Our share of the proceeds goes directly towards the £10.2 million it costs us to run our services each year — from our Inpatient Unit to our Hospice at Home team and beyond. Every single pound raised on the day makes a real and tangible difference to the people we care for in Rotherham, and we cannot overstate how much that means to us.

This was Rotherham doing what Rotherham does best — coming together, showing up, and making a difference. We are so grateful to have been part of it.
