Rotherham Hospice wins three national charity awards

Rotherham Hospice wins three national charity awards at Charity Times awards and Third Sector awards.

Shortlisted 14 times across two national awards, we’re coming home with three wins, including Medium Charity of the Year, and a highly commended for our Chair.

It’s been quite a month. Across the Third Sector Awards and the Charity Times Awards, Rotherham Hospice was shortlisted in 14 categories, recognising everything from our care and fundraising to our finance, volunteers and leadership. Being in the running alongside charities from across the country was an honour in itself. Coming home with three awards is something else entirely.

Medium Charity of the Year

At the Third Sector Awards in London on 11 September, Rotherham Hospice was named Medium Charity of the Year.

It caps one of the strongest years in our history: our first ever overall CQC Outstanding rating, 360 inpatient admissions, 12,320 Hospice at Home visits, 38,102 calls answered, and 97.1% of patients and families rating their care as excellent or very good.

But more than anything, it’s recognition of the people behind those numbers. Every nurse, carer, volunteer, fundraiser and supporter who makes sure patients and families across Rotherham get the care and support they need, exactly when they need it.

Our CEO, Mat Cottle-Shaw, said: “We are immensely proud to accept this award in recognition of all of our frontline services. We couldn’t do what we do for our patients and their families without your support. Thank you.”

Hospice at Home: Frontline Team of the Year

At the Third Sector Awards in London on 11 September, our Hospice at Home team was named Frontline Team of the Year.

While some of the team were collecting the trophy, the rest were already back out doing exactly what earned it: caring for people in the place they call home, right across Rotherham, day and night.

The team said: “What an achievement! We are so proud to be part of this amazing team. We take pride in this service and truly love the job we do. Every member of our team is such an asset and together we make Frontline Team of the Year. Proud to serve the community of Rotherham.”

This one’s for every visit made, every call answered and every family supported.

Bruce Warner: Highly Commended, Charity Chair of the Year

Our Chair of Trustees, Bruce Warner, was also Highly Commended in the Charity Chair of the Year category.

Bruce said: “I’m incredibly honoured to be highly commended. This recognition belongs to the brilliant team and Board of Trustees I have the privilege of working alongside. Together, we are committed to ensuring Rotherham Hospice continues to deliver the very best for our community.”

It’s a well-deserved recognition of the thoughtful, values-led leadership Bruce brings to the hospice. Congratulations, Bruce.

Fundraising Team of the Year

Then on 23 September, at the Charity Times Awards, our fundraising team was named Fundraising Team of the Year.

Our fundraisers work across Rotherham to bring people together, create new ways to get involved and raise the money that helps us add more life to every day. It’s a brilliant team, and this is a brilliant result for them.

But this award belongs to you, too. Every fundraiser, donor, volunteer, business, school and supporter who has ever taken part in a Rotherham Hospice event helped make it happen. We couldn’t do what we do without you.

“I’m so proud of this team. They put their heart into everything they do, and it shows. But we’d be nowhere without the people of Rotherham, who keep turning up, taking part and giving so generously. This award is as much theirs as it is ours. Thank you.”

Thank you

Awards are lovely, but they’re not why any of us do this. They’re a chance to stop for a moment and recognise the people who make Rotherham Hospice what it is: our staff, our volunteers, our trustees and the community that has stood behind us for years.

To everyone who has ever supported, cared for or believed in Rotherham Hospice, thank you. This one’s for you.
