Types of volunteering

Volunteering for Rotherham Hospice is enjoyable and rewarding but it’s not for everyone. For this reason we have a selection procedure in place that includes an interview and attendance at an induction course. This procedure will help you recognise whether volunteer work at the Hospice is right for you.

Volunteers involved in patient care areas may also need to complete a Disclosure and Barring Check. Don’t let this deter you – it’s not as bad as it sounds, and our friendly Volunteer Services staff will help you complete the form if needed.

If you would like more information on volunteering, and how to apply, please contact our HR and Volunteer Advisors by clicking here.

Volunteers play a very important role in the care of all our patients and are involved in the following areas:

Bereavement support

Volunteers work with bereaved relatives and carers who have requested bereavement support. These sessions are on a 1:1 basis and volunteers meet with their client for up to eight visits either at the Hospice or occasionally at the client’s home. All bereavement support volunteers must attend a 6-session training course and have to attend regular support meetings.

Day hospice

Volunteers support day care patients while they are attending Day Hospice. Patients come in from 10am – 3pm (Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday). Volunteers are involved with patients at our art and craft table, sitting and chatting with patients, giving manicures, and escorting patients as they move around the Hospice. On-going training is an important part of the volunteer’s role in this area. We also offer well-being, relaxation, physiotherapy and carer groups throughout the week, and sometimes volunteers assist the staff with these.

Inpatient unit

Volunteers in the inpatient area play an integral part in the care that our patients and their families receive. Spending time talking to and listening to our patients is very important and very rewarding. Also there are many tasks to do such as getting drinks for relatives and visitors, helping patients with craft activities, ensuring that the patient’s water is fresh and within easy reach, taking the daily menu round or feeding patients, and talking and supporting relatives and visitors.

Qualified therapists

Qualified complementary therapists in aromatherapy, reflexology, reiki and Indian head massage offer these therapies to our patients. Patients are seen at the Hospice only and are referred by either Day Hospice staff or Inpatient staff. All therapists must have a recognised qualification and their own insurance. Fundraising events

The Hospice plays host to many fundraising events throughout the year, and volunteers can get involved in many ways, from selling raffle tickets to marshalling at events. Volunteers can also get involved in researching and planning events as well as related administrative tasks.

Fundraising sales

Volunteers organise and co-ordinate the sale of donated and new goods at doctor’s surgeries throughout the “flu clinic” season, as well as manning stalls at Rotherham Show, and the Summer and Christmas Fair’s held at the Hospice.

Driving

Volunteers, using their own cars, pick up the patients attending Day Hospice and bring them in for 10am. They then return for the same patients to take them home again at 3pm. Our drivers do not just act as a “taxi” service, they are the first Hospice contact that the patient (and their family) will have seen that day. Also our drivers normally bring in the same patients each week, so quickly build a friendly rapport between themselves and the patient. A mileage allowance is paid to all drivers.
