Great Wall of China Challenge

Walk one of the world’s most iconic frontiers, from wild, unrestored ridgelines to beautifully preserved ramparts. Over nine days you’ll explore Beijing’s imperial heart, then trek remote sections of the Wall between Jiankou, Gubeikou and Jinshanling—staying in simple village guesthouses and soaking up epic sunrise-to-sunset views.

Arrive in Beijing

Day 1: Beijing Arrival
Meals: N/A

Welcome to China’s capital city – Beijing! One of our representatives will be waiting at airport arrivals with an Intrepid sign. Check in to your hotel and either enjoy the rest of the day at leisure, or, depending on flight times, we can add in some activities.

Imperial Beijing

Day 2: Beijing
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Today you will set out with your leader to discover Beijing’s iconic imperial treasures. Stand in Tiananmen Square, one of the largest and grandest public plazas in the world before progressing on to the Forbidden City. Enter the imposing walls of the Forbidden City, once the domain of the Ming Dynasty, for an exclusive tour through this vast complex of courtyards and lanes.

After lunch at a local restaurant, you will have a Hutong Walking tour, discover the city’s historic alleyways, lined with traditional courtyard homes (siheyuan). Walk or cycle to see local life, hidden temples, and artisan workshops.

Finally you will enjoy the Peking Duck for dinner, a culinary icon since imperial times!

Palaces & Temples

Day 3: Beijing
Meals: Breakfast and lunch

Today you will first visit the Summer Palace. This is a UNESCO-listed imperial garden in Beijing, featuring Longevity Hill and Kunming Lake (covering 75% of its 2.9  km² area). Built in 1750, it blends Chinese landscape design with palaces, temples, and bridges. Notable sites
include the Marble Boat and 700-meter Long Corridor. It served as a summer retreat for Empress Dowager Cixi and
was rebuilt after 1860 and 1900 destructions.

After Summer Palace, you will have your lunch at local restaurant. In the afternoon, we will drive you to Temple of  Heaven, built in 1420, is the world’s largest imperial sacrificial complex where Ming and Qing emperors prayed for harvests. Its iconic Circular Mound Altar and Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests showcase ancient Chinese cosmology with “round heaven, square earth” symbolism.

Mutianyu to Jiankou

Day 4: Beijing
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and Dinner

Today is a day excursion to Mutianyu Great Wall, which is the section in Mutianyu Village in Beijing. It is one of the best-preserved sections, and is one of two most visited sections of the Great Wall (the other one being Badaling Great Wall). Compared to Badaling Great Wall, the Great Wall in Mutianyu is less crowded, but is actually more interesting to visit. Mutianyu Great Wall has a history of over 1400 years (older than the section in Badaling), it was first built in the mid-6th century during Northern Qi Dynasty,
as a protective barrier to defend against northern tribes.

The wall was rebuilt in Ming Dynasty. Lunch near Mutianyu Great Wall at local restaurant. In the Afternoon We will drive you to Jiankou village and have Dinner in guesthouse in Jiankou village.

Jiankou Trek

Day 5: Beijing – Gubeikou
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

The whole day you will spand on Jiankou Great Wall treking and stay in Gubei village at night. Jiankou Great Wall, located in Beijing’s Huairou District, is renowned for its wild and precipitous terrain with a distinctive W shaped ridge resembling an archer’s bow. This unrestored Ming Dynasty section features iconic spots like Eagle Flies Facing Upward and Nine-Eye Tower, making it a top choice for photographers and adventurers. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, it offers an authentic glimpse into ancient China’s defensive architecture.

Gubeikou to Jinshanling

Day 6: Gubeikou to Jinshanling
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

This morning, you will trek on Gubeikou Great Wall and all the way to Jinshanling Great Wall,. Gubeikou Great Wall, located in Beijing’s Miyun District, is a UNESCO-listed unrestored section blending Ming and Northern Qi Dynasty
walls, famed for its strategic “Twin-Layer Defense” system and wartime relics like bullet-scarred tower. Key highlights include Panlongshan’s 24- Eye Tower and
Wohushan’s Sister Towers, offering rugged hikes with panoramic views.

Jinshanling

Day 7: Jinshanling
Meals included: Breakfast Lunch

After Breakfast you will continue the trekking on Jinshanling Great Wall (2nd part) a UNESCO World Heritage site
in Hebei Province, is renowned for its dense watchtowers (67 in 10.5 km) and intact Ming-era military features like barrier walls and inscribed bricks. Built in 1368 and enhanced by General Qi Jiguang, it offers panoramic views
from 700m altitude and is hailed as “the finest section of the Great Wall”. And have lunch on the wall by lunch box. And drive back to Beijing in the afternoon.

Jinshanling

Day 8 & 9 : Beijing

Free days to enjoy Beijing – you may wish to rest and reset after your adventure, or pick up some extra activities.

Day 9 is the end of your amazing adventure! We have arranged a private airport transfer for you.

What’s not included

Visas, late check-outs, meals/drinks not listed, drinks with included meals, tips, personal expenses, travel insurance, and optional activities. If you would like to upgrade your accommodation to single occupancy, this will come at an additional cost. 

Fitness & terrain

Expect full days on uneven stone steps and mountain paths—especially around Jiankou and Gubeikou’s unrestored sections. A good base level of hiking fitness is recommended.

Level of fitness

  • This is a walking and trekking trip, so a good level of fitness is essential.
  • Ideally, you should have some experience with hiking or trekking to fully enjoy the journey.
  • Over five days, you’ll be walking an average of 10km per day, with daily elevation gains of 300 to 500m each day.
  • Trekking between each section usually lasts between 2 and 3 hours (depending on your pace fitness level).
  • Some parts of the Great Wall are quite steep, so it’s important to come prepared with suitable footwear and clothing for the trek.
