Zoey's Midnight Memory Walk
Patient and Family Stories
Midnight Memory Walk is about remembering loved ones no longer with us and supporting local charity Rotherham Hospice, so when Midnight Memory Walk 2023 was announced, Zoey Hatfield jumped at the chance to take part!
Zoey, born and raised in Rotherham, has been a supporter of Rotherham Hospice for a long time. Zoey understands first-hand the difference hospice care can make, after her husband, Paul, was diagnosed with cancer.
Paul sadly died in November 2017 only 3 months after his diagnosis. As well as specialist end-of-life care and family support, Zoey was offered bereavement support through the Hospice. Though she was hesitant at first, she says she doesn’t regret it now. Zoey adds “I don’t know what I would have done without it.”
As a tribute to Paul, and to show Rotherham Hospice her gratitude, Zoey took part in Glow with the Flow walks, which unfortunately stopped due to the pandemic. When she heard Midnight Memory Walk was returning in 2023, Zoey couldn’t wait to take part. But it wasn’t an easy ride!
In February of last year, Zoey was diagnosed with breast cancer. Less than a month later, she was involved in a car accident and needed major surgery on her shoulder.
Thankfully, Zoey has an amazing support system around her and three weeks before Midnight Memory Walk, she was given the all clear from cancer. Zoey explains why she was taking part:
“Anything I can do to help. I’m doing it for Paul and the place that cared for him.”
“The staff were amazing. They went above and beyond for us.”
Zoey Hatfield, Rotherham Hospice supporter
Zoey went on a determined fundraising journey. She works at Morrisons, and so she walked around her workplace with a donation bucket, asking customers and co-workers to sponsor her walk. Zoey has now raised over £300 for Rotherham Hospice!
Zoey’s family came together for the Midnight Memory Walk. She was joined by her daughter Ellen and her husband, as well as her son Wade. Her 10 year old granddaughter Bella also took part and was so excited to join in, after walking the Rotherham Hospice’s Glow with the Flow in 2019 with her grandma at just 5 years old! Even the dog walked with them!
“We had lots of fun,” Zoey said. “I’ll definitely be doing it next year!”

Why your support matters
Rotherham Hospice cares for families experiencing an end-of-life illness, both physically and emotionally. As a charity, Rotherham Hospice needs to raise £3 million each year to fund vital end-of-life services and we can only do it thanks to our amazing supporters like you.
Rotherham Hospice Ambassador John Breckin explains why he’s walking in memory:
The Hospice was there for my family when we needed them. Now’s our chance to come together, remember our loved ones, and be there for the Hospice!
How can you help?
There are many ways you can support us, whether it be through holding an event, playing in our lottery, volunteering, or donating!
