This Light Up a Life, Susan remembers Edwin

Rotherham Hospice Patient Stories

Edwin was a true family man – a devoted husband, a proud dad, and a fun-loving grandad. He found joy in the everyday moments: taking his sons fishing, watching them play football, and cheering on Sheffield Wednesday. He loved to be involved, was always supportive, and always so proud of his boys.

Family holidays were a cherished tradition, beginning with camping trips and evolving into caravan adventures and cruises across the Mediterranean, Baltic, Fjords, and finally the Caribbean. He was a talented musician, a keen fisherman, and someone who could turn his hand to anything – from fitting kitchens to rescuing their youngest son from a swimming pool (after carefully removing his wallet and baccy tin!). Edwin was the family electrician, joiner, gardener, family mechanic and fixer of all things.

Known for his sense of humour and his love of life, Edwin embraced every opportunity to make memories. Whether dressing up for a party or winning a holiday park competition, he had a way of making every moment count. Christmas was especially dear to him. He was always the first one up on Christmas morning, eager to see the children’s faces as they opened their presents, and he always made sure there was a special surprise for each of them. That joy continued with his grandchildren, who lived just minutes away. Susan and Edwin would rush over on Christmas morning to see their faces and to be part of the magic.

In December 2024, as Edwin’s health declined and Susan faced her own cancer diagnosis and surgery, the family turned to Rotherham Hospice. Edwin had been receiving care from the Hospice at Home team, just as their son Steven had before his passing 18 months earlier. The sudden and unexpected loss of their youngest son had deeply affected Edwin, and the family knew they needed support.

After some initial hesitation and resistance, Edwin soon embraced the hospice. For someone who had always lived with very high anxiety, it was remarkable to see him at peace. Everything had been so thoughtfully considered, from the care box in his room to the gentle support the whole family received.

The staff made everything feel normal, and the hospice gave Edwin the chance to enjoy one last Christmas with his family. Edwin wore his Christmas t-shirt, listened to Neil Young, and even enjoyed a cheeky Baileys! Knowing Edwin was comfortable also allowed Susan to continue family traditions like attending the Christmas Eve crib service with her grandchildren while Edwin was surrounded by love and comfort

One moment stands out in Susan’s memory. On Christmas Eve, the nurses surprised the family by wheeling Edwin into the conservatory for a game of dominoes. They rearranged furniture, made space, and created a moment of joy that felt like home. It was a simple act, but one that meant everything.

“It was just like being at home. The grandchildren could come; the dogs could come. Nothing was too much trouble.”

“I left knowing he would be cared for with dignity. That meant the world to me.”

Susan recalls the thoughtful touches – a crocheted heart on his pillow, a musical biscuit barrel, and the offer of his favourite dessert, tiramisu – even at breakfast time! Edwin would accept everything with a smile, then quietly pass it to Susan when he couldn’t manage it.

When Edwin passed away peacefully on 27th December, the hospice opened its doors to the entire family. Around twenty loved ones were able to say goodbye, without rush or restriction.

Reflecting on that time, Susan describes the hospice as “a very special place” It allowed her to continue family traditions, to be Edwin’s wife in his final days, without the worry and pressure of being his main carer, and to find peace in the midst of grief. Light Up a Life is her way of celebrating Edwin’s life and the care they received
