Stephen's Volunteering Story

Staff and Volunteer Stories

It’s Volunteers’ Week, and here at Rotherham Hospice, we are celebrating our incredible volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to support our cause. Today, we shine a spotlight on Stephen, one of our dedicated volunteers who has been making a significant impact through his work with us.

 What is Volunteers’ Week?

Volunteers’ Week celebrates the amazing contributions volunteers make to communities across the UK. The celebration starts on the first Monday in June every year. It’s a chance to recognise, celebrate, and thank the UK’s incredible volunteers for all they contribute to our local communities, the voluntary sector, and society as a whole.

A Conversation With Stephen

Q: How long have you volunteered and what is your role?

A: I have volunteered for around 3 years. I run the online eBay store for the Hospice based at the Rotherham Hospice Charity Shop in Wath.

Q: What do you enjoy about volunteering?
A: I enjoy the work I do and I enjoy the great banter and friendships I have formed with my colleagues in Wath.

Q: Why do you volunteer?
A: My father was taken seriously ill a number of years ago and was sent from the hospital to the Rotherham Hospice to live out his last few days. The staff were amazing and took great care of him. I wanted to give something back to the Hospice as a thank you for their kind care. I enjoy working alongside my colleagues in Wath, and having retired, it is good to be able to still go out for a few hours a week into a work environment.

A bit about Stephen

Stephen’s journey is a tapestry of diverse experiences and passions. He began his working career in Wath, straight out of school, at the Midland Bank. After three years, he transitioned into the travel sector. At 21, he moved to London, where he spent the next decade, and it was here that he discovered his love for amateur dramatics, a passion that has stayed with him throughout his life.

After leaving his professional career, Stephen moved to Kent and returned to the travel industry, this time as a Groups, Conference, and Events Manager. He organized conferences, Christmas parties, and events for some of London’s major blue-chip clients. Concurrently, he served as a Director for the Canterbury Operatic Society, directing their annual musical productions for ten years.

When his parents fell ill, Stephen moved back up North to care for them. His love for theatre continued to thrive, and he recently directed his first production for his newly formed theatre company in Brampton. Beyond his theatrical pursuits, Stephen is an avid crafter. He creates quilts, memory quilts, cushions, and bears, and is part of the Soft Craft Design Team for a major craft company that sells on television.

In his own words, “I guess you could say I am a busy chap!”
