Sheila's story

Sheila has been married for 47 years and is now retired.  On a routine visit to her GP Practice, she bumped into Margaret, a friend who was working at the Hospice.  Sheila told Margaret that she was thinking of doing some volunteering and Margaret encouraged her to contact the Hospice.  Sheila’s work background was in administration, so she naturally fell into a role in reception.  She also decided to volunteer in the Inpatient Unit, and then 2 years ago she took on the additional role of Bereavement Support Volunteer as well.

Sheila tells us, “I consider it an honor and a privilege to be a Hospice volunteer.  It’s extremely rewarding, and I’ve even made a whole new set of friends.  I enjoy the Bereavement Support sessions, and it’s great that the first lady I supported is now a Hospice volunteer too! My three volunteer roles are very varied and I get to meet some amazing people. You really get to know the patients and their families, and it is a fantastic feeling to know that you are making a difference in their lives.”
