Remembering Sarah Poppy Summers
Sarah Poppy Summers, a marvel of a woman, possessed an extraordinary ability to appreciate life’s little joys. Her tender and whimsical disposition endeared her to all who knew her.
Sarah’s daughter Jennifer explains, “Expressing the multitude of things I admired about my mum would take weeks, as many of you can likely relate to, having also lost someone cherished.
My first encounter with Rotherham Hospice was during my mum’s transition from this world to the next.
Throughout her journey of 18 months, I often felt on the side lines, grappling with frustration and confusion over specific treatments. Yet, amid this challenging period, Rotherham Hospice emerged as a silver lining. During the two weeks my mum spent here, I did not doubt the care, respect, and support she and my family received.
Previously, I associated Rotherham Hospice with a place I’d never wish to enter. However, my perception transformed entirely. Life involves grappling with loss, a fear I’ve harboured—especially the loss of someone so dear.
Reflecting on those final days, though, I’m assured that my mum’s departure was far better than I could have ever imagined. This assurance allows me to come back to the Hospice, not with a heavy heart but with a comforting warmth.
Rotherham Hospice’s extraordinary dedication extends beyond the expected, encompassing those in need and their extended families and friends. Every member of this compassionate team contributes to ensuring the best care possible, allowing individuals to depart with grace and loved ones to find peace knowing they are in the best possible hands.”
Sarah will always be remembered by those who knew and loved her, and in another special way too. Daughter Jennifer, a professional artist and accomplished painter, often includes a poppy in her work in memory of Sarah.
You can see examples of Jennifer Elson’s art here and around the Hospice, including murals around the Memory Tree, in the Day Hospice and paintings in our quiet rooms.
Rotherham Hospice is an independent charity and relies on the generosity of our supporters to raise the £3 million needed each year to keep providing vital end-of-life care to our local community. Find out more about how you can help Rotherham Hospice here.
