Max's Fundraising Story: Remembering Granddad Jim

Rotherham Hospice Stories

At Rotherham Hospice, we believe in celebrating life’s wishes, cherishing memories, and providing compassionate support to those facing loss. Max’s story embodies this spirit in a truly touching way.

A Special Bond

Max and his grandad Jim shared an unbreakable bond. From the time Max was a baby, they were best mates – spending endless hours together playing games, watching Max’s latest adventures, and even building a special playroom where they could create lasting memories. Jim’s love and influence shaped Max’s childhood, and their time together was full of laughter, love, and joy.

Support from Rotherham Hospice

When Jim’s health declined, he was cared for at home, with Rotherham Hospice nurses providing essential support to his family. Max’s mum, aunt, and grandmother cared for Jim, and the hospice team was there when needed, offering comfort and guidance during such a difficult time. After Jim passed away, Max was never afraid – he just wanted to be with his best mate, saying his goodbyes both at home and in the chapel of rest. His grandad even had a final wish: a stool next to his grave so Max could visit, share his latest games, and keep their connection alive.

"Rotherham Hospice helped my grandad at home in his last weeks with us, and then Sunbeams, which is a part of Rotherham Hospice, helped me and my sister afterwards with grief counselling."

Finding Strength in Giving Back

Grief is a difficult journey, and for Max, the Sunbeams program at Rotherham Hospice became a safe space. The thoughtful activities, the kindness of the team, and the ability to remember his grandad in meaningful ways helped him navigate his loss. He created a special memory space in his room, filled with keepsakes of his grandad – treasures that remind him of their bond every day.

But Max wanted to do even more. Inspired by his grandad, he grew his hair long – just as Jim had in his younger years. In a remarkable act of generosity, he recently cut his hair, raising over £300 for Rotherham Hospice and donating his hair to create wigs for people with cancer. His fundraising efforts have funded 30 memory boxes for future Sunbeams children, ensuring that others receive the same care and support that meant so much to his family.

Continuing His Grandad’s Legacy

Max misses his grandad every day, but through his actions, Jim’s memory lives on. His story is one of love, resilience, and giving back – a true reflection of what Rotherham Hospice stands for. We are incredibly grateful to Max and his family for sharing their journey and for their unwavering support of our hospice and Sunbeams Bereavement Support Group.

Through Max’s kindness, he is not only keeping his grandad’s spirit alive but also making a difference in the lives of others. We are so proud of him and honoured to be part of his story.
