Celia's Story

Patient and Family Stories

Sue's Experience with Rotherham Hospice

At Rotherham Hospice, we believe in rewriting the narrative surrounding end-of-life care. Sue’s touching experience with our Hospice at Home team is a testament to the warmth, compassion, and unwavering support we provide for patients who don’t wish to come into a Hospice but would instead like to die in the comfort of their own home.

Sue’s story begins with her mother, Celia – a strong and independent woman who, after spending some time in the hospital, expressed a fervent wish to spend her final moments at home.

Reflecting on her family’s journey, Sue acknowledges, “We couldn’t have done it without them.” The Hospice at Home team became a beacon of support during a challenging time, offering solace and reassurance for Sue and her father. At first, Sue’s mother was resistant to accepting help, but the team’s professionalism and genuine care provided the foundation for a unique and dignified care plan.

Sue candidly shares, “None of it’s easy, but it was right for us.” The reassurance of knowing that support was readily available made a significant difference for her family.

What sets Rotherham Hospice apart, as Sue discovered, is not just the professional expertise but also the empathetic listening that occurred when her mother resisted help from traditional carers. The Hospice at Home team took the time to understand their unique situation and Celia’s concerns, conducting a thorough assessment and even assisting Sue in securing funding to support care at home.

“With this application and support, it made it easier for Mum to accept. We could do it in a dignified manner,” Sue shares. The breakthrough opened the door for her mother to become more receptive to the team’s assistance.

“I had no idea this wasn’t provided in other parts of the country.” Sue said, “We feel incredibly grateful to live in an area where we can access a Hospice at Home service.”

The Desire to Die at Home

Central to Sue and Celia’s story is the incredible work of Rotherham Hospice’s Hospice at Home team. This dedicated group of professionals specializes in bringing compassionate and personalized end-of-life care directly to the homes of individuals like Sue’s mother. The team’s primary goal is to honour the wishes of patients who express a desire to spend their final moments in the familiar surroundings of home.

Beyond the typical misconception that hospice care necessitates relocation to a facility, the Hospice at Home team goes above and beyond, providing emotional support, medical expertise, and assistance with daily tasks. From conducting thorough assessments to securing funding for necessary resources, the team ensures that each person’s unique needs are met with dignity and respect.

Sue and Celia’s journey exemplifies the heart-warming spirit that defines Rotherham Hospice’s Hospice at Home service — a commitment to rewriting the narrative of hospice care and providing comfort where it matters most: in the warmth of home.
