Amy stays connected with her mum through Rotherham Hospice

Rotherham Hospice is lucky to have supporters that go above and beyond for the Hospice. Amy Lowson is one of those amazing Hospice supporters who help us to raise much needed funds. This is Amy’s story.

It was in 2018 when Amy’s relationship with the Hospice began. When her mum, Gaynor Lowson, was diagnosed with cancer in January, Gaynor came to Rotherham Hospice for pain management. She was reluctant to come in at first, but as soon as she was here, it became a home away from home.

Gaynor came into the Hospice twice for pain management and then was cared for by the Hospice at Home team who taught Amy and her sisters how to care for their mum whilst the team weren’t there.

Gaynor came into the Hospice one last time and sadly passed away in June 2018.

But that isn’t where Amy’s relationship with the Hospice ended. After her mum passed away, Amy received Bereavement Counselling with one of our counsellors, Roger Williams. Amy formed a connection to the Hospice, wanting to come in and visit as much as possible… which is how she found volunteering.

At Rotherham Hospice, we always need volunteers – in shops, in the garden, at events or on the In-Patient Unit, like Amy did until Covid-19. Amy loved volunteering on the ward, knowing she was helping people at a time when it matters most. It was also an opportunity to connect with other volunteers with similar stories.

Amy has also taken her connection to the Hospice with her to the workplace.

Every year, Amy has nominated Rotherham Hospice to be the charity of the year at Hart Shaw Chartered Accountants & Business Advisers. In 2022, Hart Shaw selected the Hospice as their Charity for the next two years, and Amy is excited to help the Hospice through their volunteering scheme along with several other colleagues whose loved ones have been cared for by the Hospice.

In September 2022, she took on a new challenge – the Sheffield 10k! Alongside several colleagues, Amy completed the run whilst raising an AMAZING amount of money for charities including Rotherham Hospice.

For 2023, Amy wants to volunteer as much as she can. She’s already signed up to volunteer at the Midnight Memory Walk in June, as well as selling delicious vegan bakes with her sisters at our Summer Fair in July, with all proceeds going to Rotherham Hospice. She is also planning on helping at our Light Up a Life memorial services in December!

Amy’s story proves that it’s not just big donations that make a difference. Taking part in a sponsored run like the Sheffield 10K, getting some colleagues to form a team and completing a challenge together, encouraging your workplace to nominate us as your charity of the year, or volunteering are all excellent ways to remember your loved one, and show Rotherham Hospice some love.
