Rotherham Hospice Patient Stories
Alan’s journey with Rotherham Hospice began when his wife, Jan, was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in early 2018. After a brief respite when she received the all-clear, the cancer sadly returned, gradually worsening over time. By December, Jan’s health had significantly declined, prompting a visit to Rotherham Hospice on 9th December. They initially believed it would be just a short stay for assessment.
Ten Precious Days
What they thought would be a brief visit became ten invaluable days. Reflecting on their time at the hospice, Alan recalls entering the serene Water Lily Room, overlooking peaceful fields. In that moment, he turned to Jan and said warmly, “Jan, it’s like the Ritz.”
Alan was profoundly moved by the exceptional compassion and kindness they experienced:
“I just couldn’t believe it because everyone—the receptionists, cleaners, nurses, doctors—everyone had a smile on their face. It was really nice.”
Jan passed away peacefully at the hospice on 19th December. For Alan, the care they received during this difficult period provided immense comfort and dignity, making a deeply painful experience more bearable.
